Albert “Al” F. Lenzi, 91, of Lowell, Massachusetts, a well known and respected member of the Greater Lowell community, died Saturday October 30, 2021 at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was the beloved husband for over 64 years of Joan M. (Leahy) Lenzi, who survives him.

Born in Lowell on May 9, 1930, the son of the late Bruno and and the late Mary (Schiripo) Lenzi, he attended Immaculate Conception Grammar School, Lowell High School, class  of 1948 where he played football and basketball.

He went on to attend the former Lowell Technological Institute (nka U/Mass Lowell) where he played basketball and held the school’s scoring record for a period of time, and later from 1954 to 1958 he became the head basketball coach at Lowell High School.

Al’s career in the food and beverage industry began in 1953 when he opened The Pioneer Sandwich Shop in Downtown Lowell which later became Ricky’s Dog House, a staple in downtown Lowell which he owned for 37 years.

In 1987, he started Lenzi’s Catering in Lowell with his son Michael.  Then in 2001 Al bought the Windsor Mill House Restaurant and Function Hall in Dracut that became Lenzi’s which his son Michael continues to operate today.  On weekend nights, Al enjoyed meeting the many guests at the The Tavern at Lenzi’s Restaurant.

A former member of Vesper Country Club he was a member for over 60 years at Long Meadow Golf Club where he enjoyed golfing and playing 45’s with his many friends.

For over 50 years Al and his wife Joan spent time at their summer home on Cape Cod and was a member of the Hyannis Yacht Club and looked forward to the summer racing meets at Saratoga Springs Race Track in New York.

Al was the Co-Founder along with Dan Leahy of the Celebration of Life, a fundraising group that benefits the Mustard Seed Community in Jamaica overseen by Father Gregory Ramkissoon.

Besides his wife Joan, he is survived by three sons, Michael J. Lenzi and his wife Sandra of Dracut, Christopher J Lenzi and his former wife Susan of Tyngsboro and Albert F. Lenzi Jr. of Troy N.Y.; a daughter, Jo-Ann Lenzi of Tyngsboro; a sister, Margaret M. Lenzi of Lowell,; fifteen grandchildren, Michael P. Riley, Jennifer, Michael J. Jr., Myles , Matthew J., Stephanie M. Lenzi, Max , Madison , Micah McQuaide, Timothy , Elizabeth, Shannon Lenzi, Ryan, Brett and Sofia Lenzi; seven great grandchildren, Michael P. Riley Jr., Lana J. Riley, Amber M, Hailey M, Jack, Rylee and Giada Lenzi; a sister in law, Martha Leahy of Nashua, a dear friend and co-worker for over 69 years Bob Sawicki of Lowell and many nieces, nephews and friends.

AL was the brother of the late John Lenzi and his late in laws, Elizabeth Nangle, Elinor Leahy O’Connor, Marilyn Leahy Gill, John Leahy Jr and Daniel Leahy.

Friends may call at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH 144 EAST MERRIMACK ST. LOWELL on Wednesday November 3, 2021 from 9:00 AM until his Funeral Mass at 12 Noon. (Parking lot on left side of church) followed by burial in St. Mary Cemetery in No. Tewksbury.
