WALTER L. ARMSTRONG, SR.

Retired Executive Vice President Enterprise Bank and Trust

Walter L. Armstrong, Sr. 74, of Lowell,  a well known local banker,  passed away Sunday morning, April 17, 2011, his loving family at his side. He was married to Claire (Camden) Armstrong. In October, they celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary.

Wally, as he was known to all, was a lifelong resident of the Highlands section of the city and parishioner of St. Margaret Church.
Born in Lowell, August 30, 1936, the son of the late James F. and the late Mary E. (Sexton) Armstrong, he was educated in Lowell, a graduate of Keith Academy in the Class of 1954 and then Lowell Technological Institute (now UMass – Lowell). In later years, he taught a banking course at Lowell Tech for twelve years, earning the title of Professor Emeritus in the evening division.

Wally went to work at the Union National Bank in 1958, rising to an executive position in the commercial loan department. He then went to work for First Bank and Trust in the same capacity. In 1988, he became one of the founders of the Enterprise Bank and Trust, retiring in August of 2000 as Executive Vice President of commercial lending. Wally took great pride in his work in the banking field, especially his association with the Enterprise Bank. He was especially proud that he became a mentor to many employees of the “Bank”.

Wally was active in civic and community events serving on the Board of Directors of Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities, Lowell Catholic High School, as well as memberships in the American Heart association fund raising drives, the Lowell YMCA Alumni Association, the Old Scouts of America, and the D’Youville Senior Care Men’s Guild.  Wally’s longtime and faithful service to what is now called SAINTS: the St. John Hospital Men’s Guild in the 1980’s the Saints Memorial Men’s Guild in the 1990’s and the Saints Medical Center Foundation, Friends of the Foundation from 1997. During these years of supporting the hospitals, he was routinely on their board of directors in leadership positions. He reactivated his interest during these last years working on golf committees, where he was never at a loss for a few laughs and stories from the banking world of the Enterprise… but always ending in success and happiness for all.

An avid golfer and a member of Vesper Country Club for many years, he also enjoyed playing tennis.

Wally got his most enjoyment from spending time with his wife and family and cherished the opportunity to help others throughout his life.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters Cara J. (Armstrong) Thissell of Chelmsford and Beth Ann Armstrong of Westford; two sons Walter L. Armstrong, Jr. and his wife Elizabeth (Brown) Armstrong of Chelmsford and Paul C. • Doreen (DePalma) and Brian Bur  - Deepest Sympathy to Wally's Family
Wally always had a smile on his face to greet you at any event. It meant he was happy to see you or up to no good. The latter was usually what you came to expect from Wally. His mischievous and light hearted spirit was always good to make you laugh. I have many happy and fond memories of Wally. One that stands out in my mind is when I asked Wally to dance with me at my Sister and Paul’s wedding. We laughed, talked about golf but more importantly we acknowledged that this would be a wonderful reunion for years to come with our two families and it has been that way ever since and it been more than 20 years. Wally will truly be missed on this earth. His smile, kindness and generosity will live in our hearts forever. We share in your grief and send our love to Claire and her family. Love, Doreen (DePalma) and Brian Burns

My most sincere condolences to all of you. I pray that the memories of Wally will help ease your sorrow. One of my favorite memories is of him running out onto the sidewalk from Enterprise as he saw me passing by, of course to give me a hard time! He always made me laugh! Thinking of you and love to you all. Gail
  • James Sullivan, Jr.  - Prayers and Thoughts
I am so sorry to read of the passing of Wally. He was a wonderful man with a huge heart. Wally was a mentor to me back in my early days of banking with First Bank & Trust. One of the things I'll always remember about Wally is his smile. Prayers and peace to the whole Armstrong family. Jim
