Aphrodite Tsoumas
Aphrodite “Freda” Tsoumas, 90, a lifelong resident of the Acre Section of the City, passed away Friday evening, April 22, 2011 at Willow Manor Genesis Healthcare in Lowell. Born in Lowell, October 2, 1920, the daughter of the late John and the late Demetra (Alexakos) Tsoumas, she attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the class of 1940. She also attended St. Basils Academy Teachers’ College in Garrison, NY. She then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Lesley College in Cambridge. Miss Tsoumas was an active member of the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church and also a member of the Ladies Philoptchos Society. Miss Tsoumas was a retired teacher. She taught at the Hellenic American School in Lowell and also at the Bartlett Junior High School. She was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers Association. In Addition, she was the Secretary at the Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church for many years. She loved children and enjoyed traveling throughout the world. Miss Tsoumas is survived by two sisters-in-law Tassia Tsoumas of Lowell and Pauline Tsoumas of Boston; three nephews John G. Tsoumas of Boston, John T. Tsoumas and Peter Tsoumas both of Lowell; two nieces Angelica Fergusson and her husband Bruce of Edmonds, WA, and Demetra McDonough and her husband Kevin of Arlington. She was also the sister of the late Rev. Dr. George Tsoumas, the late Vasiliki Tsoumas, the late Theodore Tsoumas and the late Mary Tsoumas, who died April 13, 2011.

Her funeral will take place from the funeral home Wednesday morning at 10:30 o’clock followed by a Funeral service at the TRANSFIGURATION GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH AT 11:30 o’clock.
