ALFRED MIFFLIN LOWE. JR.

Alfred Mifflin Lowe, Jr. died peacefully at his home in Naples, FL, on Friday, May 20, 2011. His children and grandchildren were by his side.
“Big Al”, was born on January 28, 1924 in White Plains, NY to Deborah Faile Lowe and Alfred M. Lowe, Sr.  Growing up in Philadelphia, Al attended Northeast High School and was a pitcher on the baseball team that played for the city championship. Al, in fact, pitched the final inning and closed out the victory for Northeast. After graduation, Al enlisted in the Navy to fight in World War II, serving as a radio operator on a PT Boat in the Mediterranean. Subsequent to his honorable discharge, Al enrolled in Temple University where he met and married Marion “Minnie” Higginson of Philadelphia, in 1947.
As residents of Medford Lakes, NJ in the 1950s, Al and Minnie raised their family where Al participated in numerous national and community groups including the St. Andrew’s Society, the YMCA Century Club, the VFW SPEBSQSA while also coaching several Little League Sports. He was also a founding member of the Philadelphia Dance Academy. Professionally, Al rose to the position of VP with Atlantic Richfield, later becoming SVP, director of marketing and sales, with Arco in Los Angeles. Follwing retirement, Al and Minnie moved to Navarre, FL. In 1987, they were appointed by Gov. Bob Martinez as advisors on sate appointments in Santa Rosa.
A devout member of the Episcopal Church, Al was instrumental in establishing St, Augustine’s Church in Navarre, FL. In his later years, Al moved to Naples, FL to be with his children. A famously optimistic man, Al was extremely generous to his children and grandchildren, who called him, “Dabby”. Al is survived by his son Alfred M. Lowe, III and daughters Antoinette Costello and Jane Baldwin, Three grandchildren Alexandra Costello Marietti, Zoe I, Costello and Alden Lowe. And his siblings Marshall David, Henry Appleton, Bromley Wharton and Cecelia Sweeney and his sister Helen Lowe Rodell, deceased.

LOWE – In Naples, FL, May 20, 2011, Alfred M. Lowe, Jr.  husband of the late Marion (Higginson) Lowe. Relatives and friends are invited to his Funeral Service at the CHRIST CHURCH UNITED, 25 Central St. Andover, MA on Saturday morning at 11 o’clock. Burial in the Spring Grove Cemetery in Andover with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested a donation in his honor to the Esperanza Academy, 198 Garden St, Lawrence, MA 01840.
