     James J. Fanning 88, a lifelong resident of Lowell, passed away after a long illness.  He was the beloved husband of Grace (McAllister) Fanning, to whom he was married for over 66 years.
     Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on April 25, 1923, he was a son of the late John J. and the late Mary (McGlinchey) Fanning.  He attended Lowell schools, was a 1941 graduate of Lowell High School and played in the Lowell High School Marching Band.
     A veteran of the United States Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Frederick Funston, he saw significant action in North Africa, Italy and later, the Philippines and the South Pacific-Asiatic theater.
     He retired after over 40 years as a pressman with the Courier Citizen Co. of Lowell. He was also an avid mechanic, golfer and skier. His affable manner earned him the nickname “Buddy” or simply, “Bud” to his friends and family.
     Besides his wife Grace, he is survived by a daughter Kathleen Lowe of Dracut; two sons, David and his wife Barbara Fanning of Las Vegas, NV and Paul and his wife Linda of Groton; a granddaughter Jennalyn and her husband Matthew Buxton, two great-grandchildren, Jack and Alex Grace Buxton; a sister Virginia Nelson of Lowell.
     He was also the brother of the late John E. Fanning, Francis Fanning, Mary Fanning and Madeline Craig.
     
FANNING - In Tewksbury, June 30, 2011, at Blaire House, James J. Fanning, 88, of Lowell, beloved husband of Grace H. (McAllister) Fanning. Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday. His funeral will take place from the funeral home on Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock followed by a Funeral Mass at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH at 10 o'clock.
