NOVEMBER 18, 1915 - JUNE 26, 2011 Father of Dr. Jeffrey Stone
Robert Kemp Stone, a resident of Sun City, Arizona, and formerly a longtime resident of Overland Park, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, June 26. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Esther M. Stone; and his sister, Helen Stone.
The son of John B. and Mary L. K. Stone, he was born in Kansas City, Missouri, November 18, 1915. With the untimely passing of his father at age 14, he became the breadwinner for the family, working as a Postal Telegraph boy. A 1935 graduate of Shawnee Mission Rural High School (now Shawnee Mission North), he subsequently worked for Standard Milling in Kansas City, which began a lifelong career in the commodities industry. He entered the United States Army in December, 1941, at the rank of Private and was honorably discharged having achieved the rank of Major. In 1951 he joined The Pillsbury Company as a Millfeed Merchandiser, eventually becoming Division Manager for the United States and Canada until his retirement in 1978. Prior to his retirement, in 1974, he relocated to Hamburg, Germany, to open European Operations for Pillsbury as General Manager of European Operations. After retirement from Pillsbury, he continued to work as a full-time consultant for Vitamins, Inc. until the time of his passing. He was an avid sports fan who enjoyed travel, golf, and bowling. His passion was card games, especially bridge and poker. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his family members, especially his granddaughters. Bob will always be remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues as a kind and gentle man. He was always upbeat, with a great sense of humor, and enjoyed a good joke or prank. Those who knew him were truly blessed. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jeffrey D. and Dorothea B. Stone of North Andover, Massachusetts; his granddaughters, Kathryn D. Stone of Boston, Massachusetts and Christina D. Stone of Washington, D.C.; his nephew Roland A. Morreale and his wife Jan Morreale of Overland Park, Kansas; his grand-nephew Craig Morreale and his wife Linda and daughter Shayla of San Diego, California; and his close friend and companion Bernice Brown of Sun City, Arizona. A Memorial Service was held on July 9, 2011, at The Forum at Desert Harbor in Peoria, Arizona. Interment will be at Rochester Cemetery in Topeka, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org/dm) 3877 North 7th St, Phoenix, AZ, 85014; or Homes for Our Troops (www.homesforourtroops.org) 6 Main St, Taunton, MA 02780.
