ATHENA HOUPIS

Athena (Tsohonis) Houpis, 95, of Lowell, died Saturday morning September 22nd, at Willow Manor Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late James Houpis, who died March 15, 1973.
Born in Lowell, February 23, 1916, the daughter of the late George and the late Eleni (Kanatas) Tsohonis, she attended Lowell Schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1932.
Mrs. Houpis was a member of the Hellenic Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity and a former member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society. She was also an Honorary Member of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church.
Before retiring, she was an Inspector at the Paris Shoe Co.  Mrs. Houpis had worked in the shoe manufacturing industry in Lowell for many years.
She loved reading, solving crossword puzzles, and watching game shows on television. She was also an avid Boston Red Sox fan.
Mrs. Houpis was a loving aunt and great aunt, she is survived by two nieces Tassia Tsoumas of Lowell and Demetra Macredes of Westwood; a nephew Michael Koumarianos of West Roxbury; four grandnephews John Tsoumas and Peter Tsoumas both of Lowell, Peter Malamas of New York City and James Koumarianos of Danvers; two grandnieces Maria Macredes of Virginia and Elena Moreira of Hamilton.
She was also the sister of the late Mary McCluskey and aunt of the late Charles Malamas.
HOUPIS – In Lowell, Sept. 22, 2011, at Willow Manor, Athena (Tsohonis) Houpis, 95, of Lowell, wife of the late James Houpis. Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 4 to 8 P.M. Tuesday. Her funeral will take place from the Funeral Home Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock followed by Funeral Services at the HELLENIC ORTHODOX CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY at 10 o’clock. Burial in the Westlawn Cemetery.
