Bernard J. Burns, Jr.

 
   Bernard J. Burns, Jr. 74, of Framingham, MA and Sarasota, FL, died on September 26, 2011, while vacationing in Rome, Italy,
   Born in Lowell, September 21, 1937, the son of the late Bernard J. and the late Sarah “Sally” C. (Burke) Burns, he attended St. Michael’s Grammar School and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the class of 1955. In 1959, Bernard received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from Harvard University in Cambridge. In 1967, he earned a Master of Arts in History from Boston University.
   In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, he served as a member of the US Air Force Reserves.
   Before retiring several years ago, Bernard was an Economist for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Division of Employment and Training (now know as the Department of Unemployment Assistance.
   He is survived by two Sons:  Christian Walker Burns (Leah Baran) of Arcata, California and Andrew Jefferson Burns (Ratha Chy) of Jamaica Plain, MA; two grandsons: Caleb Quinn Burns-McGonagle and Franklin Lowell Burns of Arcata, California; a sister:  Patricia L Burns Zumhagen of New York City; a niece Karen Zumhagen Yekple (Leo Yekple). of Cambridge, MA; a nephew  Brian Zumhagen (Desia McCannon) of New York City; grandnephews and grandnieces  Finn and Hazel Yekple of Cambridge, MA and Shulamith and Art Zumhagen of New York City; his former wife Ellen Gallagher Burns of Ashland, MA; a cousin: Maryrita (Ashe) Evans of Scituate, MA, formerly of Lowell, MA; and his beloved friend, Judy Henry of Sarasota, FL.
 
BURNS – In Rome, Italy, Sept. 26, 2011, Bernard F. Burns, Jr., 74, of Framingham and Sarasota. FL, formerly of Lowell. Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST, LOWELL from 10 A.M. to 12 NOON  Wednesday. A funeral Service will held in the Funeral Home at 12 NOON on Wednesday.   • Lily and Jessica  - Rest in peace
    I will never forget the kindness, and concern that Bernard had for his granddaughter Lily. He delighted in seeing pictures of Lily as she grew. Lily and I will cherish the many letters he wrote to her, and his goodness will last in our hearts forever. We hope that he spent his last days in the arms of someone who truly loved him...he was a good man. Rest in peace, Bernard J Burns. Jessica, and your loving granddaughter Lily.
