Retired Lowell Police Officer, 37 years,
 
   Gerald A. McElroy, of York Maine, a retired 37 year veteran of the Lowell Police Department, died Thursday morning at Sentry Hill Assisted Living in York, Maine.
   He was the husband of the late Helene (Direnska) McElroy who died February 6, 2003.
   Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, May 28, 1922, the son of the late Claude R. and the late Marion R. (Nichols) McElroy, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1939. Gerry went back to school and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Lowell Technological Institute (nka U/Mass Lowell) in 1975.
  After high school, Gerry entered joined the U.S. Army in 1941 during World War II where he served as a Corporal and an expert rifleman. He was awarded several medals and ribbons, among them the Good Conduct Medal and the Victory.
  Following the War, in 1948, he joined the City of Lowell Police Department as a reserve officer. He was appointed a permanent Police Officer in 1949.
  During his decorated career with the City of Lowell Police Department, Gerry served in the Criminal Bureau, the Motorcycle Detail and as the Police Prosecutor in Lowell District Court.
  An avid runner, he was a lifelong member of the Lowell YMCA.
  Gerry is survived by two daughters Claudia Hunt and her husband John of York, Maine and Gladys McElroy Stout and her husband Edward of Barre, Vermont; three grandchildren Samantha Hunt, Alexander Stout and Katherine Stout; three sisters Barbara Chlup of Chelmsford, Cynthia Laurin of Lowell and Nanct Donahue and her husband Timothy of York, ME; many nieces and nephews.
  He was also the brother of the late June Kirby and the late George McElroy.
  Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Memorial Service to be celebrated Saturday morning October 29th at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher at 11 o’clock. Burial of his ashes will follow at the Holy Trinity Cemetery in Lowell. Those wishing may make contributions in his memory to the Lowell Humane Society, 951 Broadway St., Lowell, MA 01854.     Claudia: So sorry to read of your Dad's passing. I remember him well from our days @ York Beach in the late 60's - early 70's. My thoughts and prayers with both you and Gladys and your families.
