   Thomas J. Torpey, 81, a member of a well know Highland's family, died Sunday October 30th at Lowell General Hospital. He was the beloved husband of Barbara V. (Merritt) Torpey, who survives him, and with whom he recently celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary on May 14th, 2011. 
   Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, December 4, 1929, the son of the late James and the late Ruth (Blanchard) Torpey, he attended Billerica Schools and was a graduate of Howe High School in Billerica in the Class of 1948. A talented athlete, Tom was a star football and baseball player in high school and continued his career in both playing semi pro football and semi pro baseball. He was also a member of the Lowell All Stars baseball team.
   A veteran of the Korean War, Tom served in the U.S. Navy as a Petty officer First Class and was awarded the Good Conduct and the National Defense Service Medals.
   After the war, Tom attended East Coast Aero Tech School and worked for Bliss Gamewell in Newton Upper Falls and T.I.C in Acton. Later, he worked of  the City of Lowell as a Custodian with the School Department until his retirement in 1984.
   Tom was a member of the VFW Walker Roger's Post 662 in Lowell, the American Legion in Lowell and York Beach, Maine. He was also a member of the Howe High School Alumni Association.
   An avid fisherman, Tom loved sports and supporting the Patriots and the Red Sox.
   However, Tom's true love was his family, especially the time he spent with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
   Besides his wife, Tom is survived by six daughters Colleen Alaoui of Baton Rouge, LA, Marian Cunningham and her husband Samuel of So. Berwick, ME, Michelle Teague and her husband Daniel, Denver, CO, Diane Torpey and her fiance Ron St. Jean of Newburyport, Karen Guthrie and her fiance John Alder of Townsend, and Kathleen Ballos and her husband Michael of Townsend; a son Thomas E. Torpey of Lowell; 22 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; a brother James Torpey and his wife Dorothy of Eugene, Oregon; and many nieces nephews.
   Tom was also the father of the late Mary Torpey, the late Suzanne Torpey, the late Patrick Torpey and the late Bridget Torpey and the brother of the late Ruth LaFrance and the late Marion Torpey.

    is vs. was, cause you didnt waste one moment here when you saw what there was to do or say what there was to pray when it was to tell a joke or tell me to eat. papa you were my hero, and i only let you go cause someday i'll be in there w you. i didnt let my papa go cause i could chose not to, i didnt let him go cause i wanted to, i let him Go cause he told me to, and cause i got to get my heart ready to enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart like the bible says, for every loss for every treasure for every pain for every thing, thank the Lord. i thank God for you papa and I am happy for you to be able to be there waiting for us all to get in through jesus to where you did. I remember last time i was at grama's before the funeral you put up a picture jesus holding out his heart, and if you dont know enough about mary you dont know that jesus is savior messiah son of God, and i remember the clock you showed me with all the songs and music box motion, i remember conversations w you about the redsox i remember cook outs not just where you were there but that you were at the grill and you were the host, i remember you standing up for what's right, since i was four or five. i remember you forgiving people before i knew them well, i remember you so many ways an example a person who didnt let me down but helped me to live more bravely, helped me to love more and laugh more. i remember your practical jokes, and if this world werent phyiscal and there were no need for God to take us up alittle at a time, i know you'd still be here not wasting anything. not even time. but till then i see you in heaven or you meet me in the clouds w jesus, which ever comes first, i miss you and i only let you go cause i had to and i'm so grateful you were called home, and we all will go together one day, just please send me my way some more help from the Lord to battle fears and doubts and sorrows and to laugh as i should, and live loving living. cause you from the start were a planter of that seed of jesus in me, and that is our connection up there and from there to here, and papa i'm getting stronger cause you gave nothin but love to me and i was so proud of you, even when someone needed to hear you speak bluntly, you were honest you are honest and upright and good. papa it doesnt hurt so bad now, and it wont as time goes on, i'm glad you were was here with us part of us, so we can walk together someday, but help me send me my way angels to make me stronger and ready to do more time on this earth, cause heaven is my home too, and i miss you.
