William “Bill” Karayianis
Mighty spirit, tender heart, abundant love
William “Bill” Karayianis, a resident of Lowell for 50 years, passed away peacefully at home on February 6, 2012 in the company of his family.
Born in Lewiston, Maine on April 30, 1919, he was the son of the late Kostas and the late Vasiliki (Christodoulos) Karayianis.
As the fourth of eight children Bill (and his sister Irene) learned to be peacemakers and negotiators of the family. He was known as the quiet and sensitive one who with his easy smile could always comfort and help those in need; a trait that lasted all of his 92 years.
He graduated from Lewiston High School in 1937 and worked in the shoe and fabric mills for a number of years and with his father operated a Popcorn trailer on Lewiston Common through the 1940’s and into the 1950’s.
He met his wife of 63 years, Amalea “Emily” Linardos, at the Old Orchard Pier and they were married in 1948. They started a family and a restaurant in the early 1950’s but moved to Lowell in 1962 where Bill worked for Peter Pan Drive In Restaurant and Pete’s on Bridge Street with his brother John. He later was hired by Demoulas Supermarkets and worked as a Manager and Receiver until his retirement.
Bill was an avid reader and could be seen at the library 2 or three times a week. He enjoyed playing cards (Hand and Foot) with his wife and friends and delighted in teaching his family how to play. Summers at Salisbury Beach were a special time for Bill for that was when his family spent the most time together.
Bill is survived by his wife Emily, his daughter Dr. Sharon Karayianis of Kailua Kona, Hawaii; his son Charles “Chuck” Karayianis of Andover, MA and his adored granddaughter Amelia Bayard Karayianis currently an AFS exchange student in Braga, Portugal, his sister Irene of Huntington, Beach, CA and brother Sayre of Washington, DC. He is predeceased by his brothers Veno and John and his sisters Alexandra, Helen and Penny.
