Dorothy M. Leavitt

Beloved mother and grandmother,

 Dorothy M. (Murphy) Leavitt, 92, a member of a well-known Lowell family and now a resident of Saco, Maine, died on St. Patrick’s Day (Sunday,  March 17th) surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Lieutenant Thomas I. Leavitt of the Lowell Police Department, who passed away in 1980.
 Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on October 25, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Cornelius D. and the late Cecilia M. (Tenney) Murphy. Dorothy attended St. Michael’s Grammar School and graduated from Lowell High School (Class of 1939).
 During World War II, Dorothy was employed by the Atlantic Parachute Company. After the war, she worked for the Election Commission. Later, she joined the lunch staff at the Molloy Grammar School Cafeteria Program, which she retired from  in 1988.
 Dorothy was a communicant of St. Margaret Church and was also a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality of her parish.
 In addition to raising seven children, Dorothy loved to dance, travel, write poetry, and she was a member of the Brunswick Bowling League and TOPS Club. She loved playing bingo and skee ball. However, her greatest joy was spending time with family and friends. Her contagious smile, quick wit, wonderful sense of humor, and genuine love was appreciated by all.
 Dorothy is survived by her two daughters Mary Beth Leavitt of Saco, ME and Sheila A. and her husband Marc Lauzon of Old Orchard Beach, ME, as well as her four sons Thomas I. Leavitt of Saco, ME, Richard J. and his wife Gail Leavitt of Dracut, MA, Daniel M. and his wife Patricia Leavitt of Milton, MA, and John M. and his wife Sally Leavitt of Saco, ME. Dorothy is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Ashley, Kaila and Matthew Lauzon, Patrick and Alexandra Leavitt, Kelly and Daniel Leavitt, and Hannah Leavitt, as well as her sister Cecilia Barrett of North Chelmsford, MA and many nieces and nephews.
 Dorothy was also the mother of the late James Patrick Leavitt and was sister to the late Helen Cotter, the late Catherine Bagley, the late Cornelius Murphy and the late John Murphy.
