Margaret R. Burns, R.N.,

Retired school nurse, beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother; 

Margaret R. (O’Neill) Burns, R.N., in her 100th year, of Lowell for most of her life and more recently Dracut, died Tuesday morning at D’Youville Senior Care in Lowell.

She was the wife of the late F. Nelson Burns who died February 17, 1998.

Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, September 4, 1913, the daughter of the late Dennis and the late Mary (Hart) O’Neill, Peggy attended St. Patrick Grammar School and was a graduate of the Academy of Notre Dame in the Class of 1931. She then went on to graduate from St. John’s Hospital School of Nursing.

Peggy retired from the City of Lowell Health Department where she served as a School Nurse for over 35 years.

Active in her profession, she was a member of the St. John’s Nurse’s Alumnae Association and the Catholic Nurses of the Merrimack Valley as well as the Academy of Notre Dame Alumni Association.

A parishioner for most of her life at St. Margaret’s Church, she was also a member of the Blessed Virgin Sodality of her parish.

Peggy is survived by a daughter Mary Jane Mullen and her husband William of Dracut; two sons F. Nelson Burns, Jr. of Newburyport and Lawrence Burns of Lowell; four grandchildren Erica Conley and her husband Jamie of Ft. Myers, FL, F. Nelson Burns the III of Boston, Matthew W. Mullen and his wife Allyson of Washington, DC and Kathryn A. Mullen of Dracut; two great grandchildren Cameryn Conley and Gavin Conley; and many nieces and nephews.

She was also the sister of the late Katherine Lambert, the late Mae McCue, the late Eileen Hagler, the late John O’Neill, the late Daniel O’Neill, the late Lawrence O’Neill and the late Stephen O’Neill.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass to be celebrated Friday morning at ST. MARGARET CHURCH at 11 o’clock. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery.
