Ellen H. (Slattery) Scannell

Member of a well known Lowell family,

 Ellen H. (Slattery) Scannell died Friday November 8,2013 surrounded by her loving family. For 52 years she was the wife of the late Philip L. Scannell, Jr. She was a devoted daughter, sister, teacher, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was cherished and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
 She was born in Lowell on June 10, 1925 the eldest daughter of the late Joseph J. Slattery, Sr and Kathleen (Smith) Slattery. She resided in the Highlands and Belvidere sections of Lowell. There she raised her family of nine children. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church of Lowell, MA.  She and Philip were married in their childhood parish of St. Margaret’s Parish.
 Mrs. Scannell received her education in the Lowell schools graduating from Lowell High School in 1942 where she attained the position of Captain in the Girl Officers. She went on to attend Framingham State Teacher’s College graduating in 1946.
 She began her teaching career in Bedford, MA leaving her position after her first child was born. She was a devoted wife and mother of 9 children. She went back to teaching and taught at the Varnum School in  Lowell after her youngest child went to kindergarten.
 Mrs. Scannell was involved in many civic organizations which included the Sisters of Charity, Retired Teachers Association, Middlesex Women’s Club, the Guild of the Infant Savior, Girl Scouts as well as a lifetime member of Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro, Ma.
 Mrs. Scannell spent her adult life involved in the activities of her 9 children 15 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren  in both  Lowell and Seabrook Beach. She enjoyed travel, theater, attending many events and sporting activities as well as time spent with family and friends on the beach.
 Mrs Scannell is survived by her six daughters, Joellen Scannell of Lowell, Maureen Hawkins and her husband Donald of Seabrook Beach, NH, Susan Scannell and her husband Kevin Fleming of Exeter, NH, Priscilla Scannell of Lowell, Kathleen Isernio and her husband Vincent of Marston Mills, MA and Maryann McCall and her husband Frederick O III of Lowell; three sons Philip L. Scannell III and his wife Lynne (DeCarolis) of Gloucester, MA, Dennis Scannell and his wife Ann (Lerager) of Lowell and George P. Scannell of Lowell and Seabrook Beach, NH. 15 grandchildren, Matthew Rando and his wife Erin Gillis, Stephen Rando and his wife Vanessa (Pollard), Kerri and D.J. Hawkins, Jennifer (Scannell)  Winston and her husband Eric, Kayleigh (Scannell) Rizzo and her husband Kelly, Ellen (Fleming) Clark and her husband Gary, Patrick and  Michael Fleming,  Elizabeth (Partyka) Quirbach and her husband Drew, Joseph Partyka, Peter and Dana Isernio and Christine and Andrew McCall.  3 great grandchildren – Julie and Jackson Winston and Benjamin Rando. One sister Mary (Slattery) Boland of Bradford, MA One Brother Charles Slattery and his wife Brenda of Rye, NH, sister-in-law Mary (Scannell) Slattery of Old Orchard Beach, ME and Cornelia (Scannell) Donnellon of Erie, PA as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers John J. Slattery and Joseph J. Slattery, Jr.
 Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 Pawtucket Street at Fletcher from 4 to 8 on Thursday. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her Funeral Mass to be celebrated at St. MARGARET CHURCH in Lowell on Friday at 9:30 o’clock. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury.
