John J. Gill

Veteran of WW II; 101 years old;

 John J. Gill, 101, a resident of the Pawtucketville section of the City, but originally from the Acre, died Monday morning at Lowell General Hospital after a brief illness.
 Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, August 16, 1913, the son of the late Thomas F. and the late Ellen (McDermott) Gill, he attended the Bartlett school and went on to graduate from Lowell High School.
 John entered the U.S. Army during World War II and served with the 252nd Combat Engineers in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany.
 Following the service, John worked for the Commonwealth of Mass Department of Public Welfare as a Custodian for over 32 years.
 Active with his parish, John served as an usher at the Shrine of St. Rita Church.
 He was a member of the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans and the Association of Retired State, County and Municipal Employees.
 John enjoyed walking all over the City and was a familiar site to the many people who saw him on his walks. He also made daily visits to join his extended family at Macheras Service Mart where Dan, Peter and John Macheras and the rest of the group gathered.
 He is survived by two nephews John O’Hearn and his wife Veronica of Knoxville, TN and Peter T. O’Hearn and his wife Jody of Lowell; two nieces Marion O’Hearn, R.N. of Lowell and Judy (Gill) Patrick and her husband Cecil “Pat” of Goffstown, NH; many grandnieces and grandnephews.
 John was also the brother of the late Marion Gill, the late Helen O’Hearn and the late Walter, Thomas and Joseph Gill.
 Friends may call at the O’DONNELL FUNERAL HOME 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 8:00 to 8:30 A.M Friday morning. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the SHRINE OF ST. RITA CHURCH at 9 o’clock.
