Lifelong Lowell Resident, Korean War Veteran, 86

Bertrand H. Durgin, III, 86, of Lowell and recently of Braintree, MA, peacefully left us on his birthday, Saturday, April 25th, at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital – Milton. Beloved husband of the late Sophie (Kalogeropoulos) Durgin who died October 23, 1983, he was a loving and dedicated father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on April 25th, 1929, the son of the late Bertrand H., Jr. and Mary (McNamara) Durgin, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School, Class of 1946. He also attended Lowell Technical Institute (now known as UMass-Lowell) where he studied Chemistry.
A veteran of the Korean War, Bert proudly served his country as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force. His career with Joan Fabrics, Inc. of Lowell as a Traffic Manager spanned over 35 years where he also enjoyed participating in the company bowling league. His greatest passions were his family, especially his grandchildren and movies and musicals of the 1940’s, especially those featuring Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby. He also enjoyed his beloved New England sports teams, especially the Boston Red Sox. His contagious smile, sense of humor and humility, along with his love of the Catholic faith and willingness to help those in need, were truly an inspiration to all.
Bert is survived by a daughter, Mary K. (Durgin) McCarthy, and her husband Brian of Henrico, VA; a son, John C. Durgin and his wife Maureen (Gralton) Durgin of Quincy, MA; five grandchildren, Lauren McCarthy, Timothy Durgin, Daniel McCarthy, Bridget Durgin and Eileen Durgin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Mary (Durgin) Ross and the late Katherine Durgin.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff and residents at Sunrise of Braintree, Assisted Living for their exceptional care and friendship.

I became friends with Mr. Durgin's son John in high school. I will never forget when I met Bert because of how different their relationship seemed to be from other teenager parent relationships I knew. Typically parents of adolescents create an emotional distance either because they want it or they feel their child wants it. There was none of that between John and his dad. Anyone looking at them could tell how much that they loved each other, and because of that it felt good just to be around them. Bert represents so much of what I love about my hometown of Lowell, and of my friends and family from there. It is because of people like him that I am continued to be drawn to the city even today. His life was the life I knew from my own dad, it was the life I respected, it was the life I wished for myself. It was working hard at more than one job, it was bowling night with friends, it was listening to the Sox on the radio, it was animated conversations with your family, it was doing whatever you could for the ones you love. There was no pretense, no show, no Cadillac Cars, no beach houses or boats. The life he led was one hundred percent real and because of that it was an honor and a pleasure to have known him.
