John M. “Jack” Vaughan
Formerly of Lowell, retired Engineer James River Paper Co.;
John M. “Jack” Vaughan, 83, a resident of Lunenburg for over 50 years, died peacefully Wednesday morning at the Apple Valley Center in Ayer. He was the beloved husband of the late Francelina C. (Barros) Vaughan, who died October 17, 2010. They were married in 1959 andafter retiring, they enjoyed travelling and spent over 20 years wintering in Sarasota and Venice, Florida.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, August 24, 1932, the son of the late John F. and the late Agnes S. (Sharkey) Vaughan, he attended St. Patrick School and was a graduate of Lowell High School in the Class of 1950.
A proud veteran, Jack entered the U.S. Army in 1952 and served his country during the Korean Conflict as a photo lithographer while stationed in Tokyo.
After returning from the service, he worked at Sullivan Brothers in Lowell for several years before earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Paper Engineering from Lowell Technological Institute (NKA U/Mass Lowell).
Jack worked in the paper industry for over 30 years, most notably as a engineer and supervisor at the James River Paper Company (formerly Weyerhaeuser) in Fitchburg, Massachusetts until his retirement.
A man of many passions and talents, Jack was an accomplished baseball player during high school and in the service, having played battalion level baseball while in Japan.
He had a beautiful tenor voice and loved music, especially the opera and Broadway. He performed in many choral groups and musical theatre throughout the years, and particularly enjoyed watching and listening to the Metropolitan Opera.
A lifelong Red Sox fan, Jack loved to play golf, most often while he was in Florida.
Jack is survived by three sisters Ann P. Cuneo and her husband Paul of Harvard, Mary V. Wood and her husband David of Beverly and Sheila V. Harrington and her husband John of Lowell; many loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and his dear cousins Judith (Carney) Goodwin of South Windsor, CT and John F. Carney, III of Falmouth.
