S. KATHLEEN HINES

retired Lowell school teacher;

S. Kathleen “Kay” (O’Malley) Hines, 96, of Westford, died unexpectedly on April 13 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua, N.H. She was the beloved wife of the late David K. Hines, Sr. of Lowell who died March 10, 2003.

Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, August 31, 1919, she was the only daughter of the late Dr. Joseph and the late Sadie (McDonnell) O’Malley and moved to Lowell as a young girl. She attended Lowell Public Schools and graduated from Lowell High in 1937. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Music from Lowell Teacher’s College (now UMass Lowell) in 1941.

Before retiring, Kay was employed as a school teacher with the City of Lowell. She taught a wide variety of students, from third grade to Army soldiers (in WWII). She was also a principal in the Billerica School System. She dedicated most of her career to the Lowell school system, teaching at the Coburn and Varnum schools. Upon her retirement in 1990, she received honors from the city and the state. She was a long-standing member of the United Teachers Association of Lowell.

When not teaching, Kay loved to sing, dance, play bingo, cheer for her grandsons at their sports events, and play with her daughter Dale's dog, Daisy. She was a long-time parishioner of St. Michael's Church in Lowell where she sang with their choir. She also loved the beach where she spent countless happy hours with her family and wonderful friends.

Kay was the loving mother of David K. Hines, Jr. of Billerica, and Dale Kathleen Hines of Westford. She was the loving grandmother of Kevin, Sean, and Daniel Hines, all of Billerica. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Harold Hines and his wife Doris Hines of Nashua, N.H., and their four children Louise Hines-Ike, James Hines, Connie McCarthy and Daniel Hines. In addition, she is survived by Dale's boyfriend, Daniel Knowles, of Reading.

Kay dedicated her life to her family, her deep faith in God and teaching. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

  • Susan Koumpouras  - Deepest Sympathy
    I remember having Mrs. Hines as a teacher in the 4th grade at Varnum School back in 1975-1976. She was a good teacher and I have fond memories. She also was my home room teacher and I still recall how she had our desks setup in the room. I can see it clearly in my mind. I am so sorry for your loss...
  • James Koumpouras  - Teacher.
    Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. You taught me so many lessons and I learned. Thank you. You were there every day and I learned. Thank you. You helped a fourth grade student advance to the next grade. Thank you. I read all my report cards now from my childhood and remember how each of you would guide us. Varnum School was such a good place to learn because people like you taught us. God Bless. Love, Jim Koumpouras
  • Cheryl  - Dave, Remember God's Promise
    It is only we who grieve in these moments, as our loved ones transition to an eternal life in the arms of our Lord. That doesn't make it any easier as we find ourselves wanting to pick up the phone or visit, only to remember the space in our lives that can never be filled. Take solace knowing your mom had a wonderfully long life, knew that her son loved her unconditionally, understood her, and was there for her always. No doubt she took pride in you, knowing that her hand and heart were instrumental in every accomplishment and every loving thing you've ever done, and ever will do. You are surrounded by people who love you, Dave... allow us to bring you strength during this difficult time, and through the days and months ahead as the grief ebbs and flows. Much love, Cheryl
