S. Kathleen “Kay” (O’Malley) Hines, 96, of Westford, died unexpectedly on April 13 at St. Joseph's Hospital in Nashua, N.H. She was the beloved wife of the late David K. Hines, Sr. of Lowell who died March 10, 2003.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, August 31, 1919, she was the only daughter of the late Dr. Joseph and the late Sadie (McDonnell) O’Malley and moved to Lowell as a young girl. She attended Lowell Public Schools and graduated from Lowell High in 1937. She earned her Bachelor's degree in Music from Lowell Teacher’s College (now UMass Lowell) in 1941.
Before retiring, Kay was employed as a school teacher with the City of Lowell. She taught a wide variety of students, from third grade to Army soldiers (in WWII). She was also a principal in the Billerica School System. She dedicated most of her career to the Lowell school system, teaching at the Coburn and Varnum schools. Upon her retirement in 1990, she received honors from the city and the state. She was a long-standing member of the United Teachers Association of Lowell.
When not teaching, Kay loved to sing, dance, play bingo, cheer for her grandsons at their sports events, and play with her daughter Dale's dog, Daisy. She was a long-time parishioner of St. Michael's Church in Lowell where she sang with their choir. She also loved the beach where she spent countless happy hours with her family and wonderful friends.
Kay was the loving mother of David K. Hines, Jr. of Billerica, and Dale Kathleen Hines of Westford. She was the loving grandmother of Kevin, Sean, and Daniel Hines, all of Billerica. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Harold Hines and his wife Doris Hines of Nashua, N.H., and their four children Louise Hines-Ike, James Hines, Connie McCarthy and Daniel Hines. In addition, she is survived by Dale's boyfriend, Daniel Knowles, of Reading.
