Loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, 87
Edward F. Keon, 87, of Lowell, died Monday, June 6th at his home with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of 52 years to the late Mary (Moran) Keon who died December 6, 2004.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts, July 2, 1928, a son of the late Philip J. and the late Mabel T. (Farrell) Keon, he attended St. Patrick Grammar School and was a graduate of St. Patrick High School. Eager to further his education, following his military service and proudly taking the opportunity to utilize the G.I. Bill, he went on to graduate with highest honors from St. Anselm College in Manchester, NH with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and philosophy. He then attended Harvard University for post graduate studies in physics. Ed proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and received an Honorable Discharge in 1947. Before retiring, Ed was President of Stackpole Fibers in Lowell. Previously, he was Founder and President of High Temperature Materials in Lowell which designed space age materials used in rocket industries. Among his many interests, Ed was an inventor, scientist and businessman and was a holder of 4 patents. He was an avid reader and loved traveling around the world, especially to Ireland where he owned a second home. He was also a past Chairman of the Lowell Redevelopment Authority. Ed is survived by three daughters Moira Greene of County Clare, Ireland, Sheila McTigue and her husband Michael of County Clare, Ireland and Kathleen LaFlamme and her husband Kevin of Lowell, MA; two sons Edward F. Keon Jr. and his wife Patricia of Morristown, NJ and Thomas P. Keon and his wife M. Winifred of Bethesda, MD; fifteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers Philip J. Keon and his wife Nancy of Tewksbury, MA and Leo Richard Keon and his wife Betty of Wells, ME; and many nieces and nephews. He was also brother of the late Patricia Ashe and the late Gerald Keon. Friends may call at the O'DONNELL FUNERAL HOME, 276 PAWTUCKET ST. at Fletcher from 3 to 7 P.M. Wednesday. His funeral will take place from the funeral home on Thursday morning at 9 o'clock followed by a Funeral Mass at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH at 10 o'clock. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery.
