CHANGE IN SERVICES - Alice E. Monahan

Loving sister and aunt

Alice E. Monahan, 69 of Lowell passed away peacefully on December 30, 2017 at Northwood Nursing Home, surrounded by the love of family and staff.
She was born in Boston, MA on August 24, 1948, the daughter of Joseph William Monahan, Jr. and Anne McCarthy Monahan.
Alice attended St. Coletta School in Hanover, MA and Mt. Hope School in Nashua, NH.   Her treasured memories included her trip to Lourdes with Cardinal Cushing in 1959; participation in the World Special Olympics Winter Skiing Events in Utah in 1985, and annual Special Olympics swimming as well as field and track events in Massachusetts and New Hampshire; friendships with Camp Fatima and RARA attendees and staff; spiritual retreats at Rivier College and St. Christopher Church; advocacy for the developmentally disabled and disenfranchised; and, most recently, Goodwill Ambassador/Greeter at Peregrine Assisted Living facility and Northwood Nursing Home.
Among Alice’s hobbies were drawing, painting, reading, singing, writing, current events, sports, chair-dancing, and socializing/preaching.  DD’s turbo coffee, Sullivan’s strawberry sundae with the works, and the Good Times’ prime rib extravaganza were among her favorite treats.  Influential people in Alice’s life included the Holy Family, Audrey Marie Santos, Channel 4’s Jack Hynes, Channel 9's Charlie Sherman and the Founder of Sony (with no bologna).  Alice treasured her family and friends from all walks of life, these relationships grounded in faith, love, wisdom, and humor.
Alice is survived by brother, Joseph W. Monahan III and his wife Claire of Winchester, MA; sister, Anne Marie Daniels and her husband Jack of Exeter, NH; sister, Ellen Trojan and her husband George of Lee, NH; brother, Thomas F. Monahan and his wife Jill of Nashua, NH.  She loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own children.  Among them are Jay and Susan Monahan (Ponte Vedra, FL), Brendan and Abby Monahan (Winchester, MA), Justin and Sarah Monahan (Belmont, MA), Julie and James Maffei, Jr. (Medford, MA), Kay and Mark Mulcahy (Manchester, NH), Meghan and Ryan Granger (Hampton, NH), George and Christine Trojan (Dover, NH), Brian and Kathleen Trojan (Boston, MA), Amanda and Gavin McGrath (Manchester by the Sea, MA), Matthew Trojan (Washington, DC), Jamie and Mike Coppens (Duxbury, MA), Jeffrey Monahan (Nashua, NH) and Kelly Monahan (Nashua, NH).  Twenty-four grand nieces and nephews added even more joy to her life. Alice had countless long-time friends who further enhanced her life especially Sue Comacho, Laurie Pintel and Donna Michaels.
Deceased family members include her parents, Joseph and Anne Monahan; sister, Paula V. Monahan; and sister-in-law, Joanne (Hill) Monahan. We trust that they are now wrapped in Alice’s gigantic, warm embrace and sharing countless hearty laughs.

Such wonderful memories I have had of Alice since working with her in the recreation program at the ARC in the 80's - an active, caring woman, full of life and always concerned about others. Thinking of Alice's family at this time and will hopefully be there on Friday morning.
