James Warren Flood, Jr.
Well known Greater Lowell attorney;
James Warren Flood, Jr., 74, of Lowell, a widely renowned and respected attorney in the Merrimack Valley for nearly 50 years, passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 at Mass General Hospital in Boston surrounded by his family.
He was the beloved husband of Judith A. (McCluskey) Flood, his wife of 48 years, who survives him.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, January 6, 1944, son of the late James W. Flood, himself an attorney, and Catherine J. (Whelan) Flood, he attended Lowell schools and was a graduate of Lowell High School with the Class of 1962. Jim then studied at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester, NH, from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts.
He then focused his studies on law, first earning his Juris Doctor from the Boston College Law School and later his Master of Laws from Boston University School of Law.
After decades of practicing law in and around Lowell, Jim eventually formed a partnership with his son James and daughter Catherine, both attorneys, creating Flood Law Office, PC in Lowell
In addition to his work as an attorney, Jim was a longtime affiliate of the Lowell Five Cent Savings Bank, serving as an incorporator, director, clerk, and, ultimately, member of the Executive Committee of the Bank.
When he wasn’t working, Jim could often be found golfing at Vesper Country Club - where he served as Club President in 1991 - and Long Meadow Golf Club. His exploits on the links involved several appearances in the Lowell City Golf Tournament - “The Cities” - in which he made his debut at the age of seventeen. He never won, but he always had a good time.
His passing will be a great loss to his family, his friends, and, more broadly, pretty much anyone who made his acquaintance. He possessed a rare, natural affability and couldn’t help but make friends everywhere he went. Even while in the hospital, Jimmy Flood was making new friends.
Upon learning of Jim’s passing, his dear friend Jack Donohoe wrote a tribute, of sorts, to his character. It reads, in part:
“Jim’s priorities were his family, his friends, his city and his profession. He cared about them so deeply...let’s make no mistake about it, Jim and his family are Lowell’s best foot forward. People like Jim are what make Lowell so special. Ultimately, it brought out the qualities that made Jim Flood so special. At the end of our journey in life, it’s about helping another. Jim Flood knew and lived this truth. He helped scores and scores of people. I know. I was one of his biggest beneficiaries. His life was a blessing that death can never erase.”
In addition to his wife Judy, Jim is survived by four children, all of whom brought him great joy: James W. Flood III and his wife Alanna of Lowell; Catherine J. Flood and her husband Christopher Huse of New Hampshire; William P. Flood of Lowell; Thomas F. Flood of Denver, CO; two grandchildren, Patrick Michael Flood and Ainsley Jane Flood; a sister, Anne White and her husband Wayne of Lowell; several nieces and nephews; and his faithful four-legged friend, Buddy.
The Flood family would like to express their deepest appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at Mass General Hospital for the professionalism, dedication, and compassion shown during Jim’s time in their care.
The family would also like to thank the Monastery of St Clare of Andover. The constant prayers and steadfast faith of the Poor Clare Sisters sustained Jim and his family during this challenging time.
Family and friends will be received at LONG MEADOW GOLF CLUB, 165 Havilah St., in Lowell Wednesday evening from 4 to 8 P.M for a Memorial Visitation. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass Thursday morning at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH in Lowell at 10 o’clock (Please meet at Church) followed by his Committal services at St. Patrick Cemetery.
