John Reid Stevens, a prominent Boston businessman, age 85, of Boston, MA, passed away peacefully on May 29th, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his family.
John was born on May 11, 1940, in Lowell, MA to the late Elmer Stevens and the late Catherine (Reid) Stevens. John was a charming, brilliant man who rose from a summer job digging holes for Lowell Electric to retiring as President & COO of Eastern Utilities Associates. He was a devoted husband and father, and there were no limits to the lengths he'd go to spoil his five grandchildren.
John was a graduate of the Moody School, Lowell High School ('58), Dartmouth College ('62), Boston University, (MBA '67) and Harvard University's AMP ('83). He was a naval officer on the USS Intrepid during the Cuban Missile Crisis, returning to start his life-long career in leadership for several New England utility companies.
On May 1, 1965, John married the love of his life, Nancy (McHale) Stevens. They shared 60 wonderful years together, living in the western suburbs of Boston before enjoying a retirement split between Beacon Hill in Boston and a summer house in Orleans and then later Kennebunk, ME.
John is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy Stevens; daughter Amy Stevens and her husband David Pittelli; son David Stevens and his wife Kerry (Lyman); grandchildren Catherine and Alexander Pittelli, Patrick, Finley and Bridgit Stevens; his sister Judith Lynn Stevens of Lowell and dozens of nieces, nephews, and godchildren.
In addition to his parents, John was pre-deceased by his sister Barbara, who died in infancy.
A man of high integrity, John enjoyed golf, gardening, travel, and reading, and was a member of the Clover and Somerset Clubs of Boston. But mostly he just wanted to spend his time holding his wife's hand and spoiling the ones he loved.
"Time and tide wait for no man," as said by John Stevens every time he saw the ocean.
