Mary Eyres Obituary

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend;

Mary E. (Haggerty) Eyres, 96, of Lowell, Massachusetts, a member of a well-known Lowell family, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

She was the beloved wife for 52 years of Robert E. Eyres, who predeceased her in 2004.

Born in Lowell, MA, October 20, 1929, the daughter of the late George F. and the late Alice (McLaughlin) Haggerty, Mary graduated from the Academy of Notre Dame in the class of 1947.

Mary worked as an Administrative Assistant at Lowell High School for over 42 years.

Longtime associations with the Lowell school system ran in the family.

Her father, at one time Lowell’s city solicitor, coached the Lowell High School boys track team from 1918 to 1963 – a remarkable 45 years.

An avid reader, Mary in her later years enjoyed the time spent with her book club, which afforded her occasions to socialize along with discussing the latest “must read” novels.

She also enjoyed golfing and the friendships formed with the “nine-holers” as a longtime member of the Vesper Country Club.

Most of all, Mary loved her family, especially spending time with her grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

A longtime communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church, she embraced her Catholic faith throughout her life.

That dedication almost matched the pride she had in her all-Irish heritage, something she would often espouse.

She is survived by two daughters, Beth Webster and her husband Bruce of Kennebunk, ME, and Martha McArdle and her husband David of Lowell, MA; two granddaughters, Alison Eyres McArdle of Charlestown, MA, and Julie Bradley McArdle of London, UK; a sister-in-law, Jean (Lehane) Haggerty of Newburyport, MA; two nephews, David Haggerty and his wife Laurie, and Michael Haggerty and his wife Jennifer; four nieces, Lisa DelDotto and her husband Alfred, Jane Freeman and her husband Scott, Carolyn Spellman and her husband Michael, and Katherine Machado and her husband Joseph; and many nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.

Mary was the sister of the late Philip Haggerty and Dr. Joseph Haggerty.

The family would also like to especially acknowledge those in charge of Mary’s round-the-clock care during her final years, which allowed her to remain in the familiar surroundings of her home until her passing.

Monica DePalma, Winfred Muriuki, Susan Njoroge, Nyakio Kamau, Alice Chege, and Lucy Ngugi transformed their duties into a true labor of love for which the family will be forever grateful.
