Stephen G. Kelly, 61, of Lowell, MA, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Saturday, January 10, 2026.
Born on January 25, 1964, in Melrose, MA, Stephen was predeceased by his parents, James E. Kelly and Emily G. (Larson) Kelly. Stephen attended Melrose schools and was a graduate of Melrose High School, Class of 1982.
Stephen began his professional journey at the young age of 11, working alongside his father, his brother Jamie, and the other partners in the newly formed company Equipcom, Inc. in Wakefield, MA. There, he learned drafting, machining, and the many facets of mechanical engineering and design that put him on the path to a successful career with high-end micro-electronic companies. In 1985, he joined Microsemi of Watertown, where he spent 30 years designing, developing, and manufacturing semiconductors for the aerospace and other industries, steadily advancing to the role of Vice President of Operations.
After retiring from Microsemi, Stephen embarked on a new professional challenge, opening his own semiconductor company, Freebird Semiconductor, which was later acquired by EPC Space, where he served as Vice President of Operations until his passing. Over the course of his career, Stephen was awarded nine patents, a testament to his innovation, expertise, and dedication to engineering and designing excellence.
Stephen had many passions and interests throughout his life. He enjoyed building and operating live steam model locomotives. He was the youngest member of the Waushakum Live Steamers club. He also enjoyed building HO-scale train layouts, collecting antique cars, and cooking. He also took great pleasure in his cigars and had recently joined a cigar club, where he enjoyed relaxing and unwinding.
Above all, Stephen will be remembered for his kind heart and generous spirit. He was always willing to lend a hand and support family and friends whenever he was needed.
He is survived by his brother, James E. Kelly Jr., and his wife, Andrea of Melrose, MA; his sister, Ruth Anne Murphy, and her husband, Steven of Windham, ME; his longtime partner, John Montbleau of Lowell, MA; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Winston.
The family will be holding a Celebration of Life and Committal Services later this spring in Melrose. Those wishing may make contributions in his memory to Lowell Humane Society.
