William C. Geary
Well-known local Attorney;
William C. Geary, devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather, died peacefully at home on November 17, 2025, in the presence of his loving family.
He was the loving husband of the late Nancy (Kelley) Geary to whom he was married for 59 years prior to Nancy’s death in 2014, living in Lowell, Massachusetts where they raised their six children.
Bill was born in Lowell, MA, on May 25, 1929, the beloved son of the late Catherine E. (Delehanty) Geary and former Lowell Mayor and Massachusetts State Senator William C. Geary. Bill was proud of his Acre roots, where he grew up surrounded by his loving extended family and lifelong friends. He attended St. Patrick School and Keith Academy. Bill is a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1948 stationed in Korea during the occupation. He received the WW II Victory Medal for his military service.
Following his service in the U.S. Army, Bill graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature. Bill later graduated from New England School of Law. Following law school, he was First Assistant District Attorney for Middlesex County before establishing a local law practice, Geary & Geary, with his brother and best friend, the late Eugene R. Geary. Bill was a respected and well-known member of the legal community, a seasoned trial attorney, and an authority in eminent domain cases. Bill enjoyed politics and served as Chairman of the Democratic City Committee. His political hero was Abraham Lincoln, whose portrait hung prominently in Bill’s office for all his years as a practicing attorney.
Most importantly, Bill was a cherished family man and friend. He was deeply involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren, always willing to provide wise counsel for his children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Bill was an avid golfer, known for his remarkably fast pace of play, and held memberships at Andover Country Club and Longmeadow Golf Club. In one particularly memorable round, a Bald Eagle flew just over his head while playing golf on his birthday. He also enjoyed reading literature (Charles Dickens was his favorite); playing card games with friends, especially Forty-Fives; and taking long walks. He was, of course, a fan of all local sports teams, especially the Red Sox and Patriots. Bill was a die-hard Notre Dame football fan and enjoyed travelling to South Bend with his kids and grandkids to take in a game whenever the opportunity presented.
Bill is survived by five of his children: William C. Geary III and his wife Kathleen (Cole) Geary of Andover, Catherine M. Geary and Heinz-Dieter Meyer, Stephen B. Geary and his wife Ellen (McCabe) Geary, John C. Geary and his wife Beth (Lynch) Geary, and Nancy Geary Funaro and her husband Francis Funaro, all of Lowell. Additionally, Bill is survived by his ten loving grandchildren: Caitlin (Geary) Baggeroer and her husband Mark, Sean Geary and his wife Jane, Jennifer (Geary) Beardsall and her husband Andrew, Anna Geary-Meyer, Meghan (Geary) Conlon and her husband Jake, Henry Funaro, Matthew Geary, Nora Funaro, Bridget Geary, and Jack Geary. He was a proud great grandfather of six great grandsons: Ryan and Connor Baggeroer, Archer and Remy Beardsall, and Nolan and Aidan Geary. He is survived by his sister Marie (Geary) Donovan and sisters-in-law Dorothea Kelley and Virginia Geary.
Bill was the loving father of the late Joseph P. Geary who died October 21, 1986.
Bill is pre-deceased by his sisters Kathleen (Geary) Morris and her husband Richard, Carol Geary, and Estelle Geary, brothers Eugene R. Geary and sister-in-law Marie (Rioux) Geary, Paul J. Geary and sister-in-law Ann (Barrett) Geary, and brother-in-law George Donovan. He was also the brother-in-law of the late Cornelius Kelley, Daniel and Dorothy Hogan, and Paul and Eleanor Freeley.
Bill was loved and admired by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom he loved dearly. They, along with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, will miss his keen sense of humor, his hilarious stories, and his zest for life.
